Patient's question:
A classmate's child got pneumonia before reaching the full moon, and today I went to the hospital to visit. I saw the child receiving oxygen therapy. Why do newborns with pneumonia need oxygen?Doctor's answer:
Newborn pneumonia can be classified into newborn aspiration pneumonia and newborn infectious pneumonia based on different etiologies. The former can be further divided into amniotic fluid aspiration pneumonia, meconium aspiration pneumonia, and cow's milk aspiration pneumonia. For severe cases of pulmonary atelectasis, treatments include aerosol inhalation, postural drainage, regular turning and back tapping, timely suctioning of nasal and oral secretions, and tracheal irrigation. Oxygen support should be provided to maintain PaO2 levels between 50~80 mmHg to 80 mmHg. For mild cases, oxygen is delivered through a mask, while for severe cases, mechanical ventilation support is required.
