How to treat a newborn's stuffy nose?

Patient's question:

My baby is 10 months old. Recently, he has had severe nasal congestion at night, which has led to poor sleep at night. What could be the reason? How should it be treated?

Doctor's answer:

When a baby has a stuffy nose, first use a small flashlight to check if there is mucus in the nostrils, and then handle it accordingly. If there is mucus in the baby's nostrils, you can gently pinch the outside of the nostrils. The mucus may fall off or trigger the baby to sneeze to clear it out. If the above methods are ineffective, you can apply a small amount of cold boiled water or some anti-inflammatory nasal drops or physiological saline into the nostrils to soften the mucus, and then use the above methods. You can also use a small cotton swab to remove the "mucus." Experienced parents can use tweezers to pick them out. This is the fastest and most effective method, but avoid inserting the tweezers too deep.
