Flaunting - An Alternative Human Manifesto

Author: [Japanese] Mitiko Kishihara, translated by He Jihui

Features: The body of a woman (color), the gaze of a man (lewdness) — "flaunting" in the public eye is a shallow conspiracy between the genders. This book subverts the understanding of "flaunting" ands it as a woman's "dominance" over her body, her erotic desires, and her spiritual space. The book "Flaunting — An Alternative Human Manifesto" distinctly embodies a Western feminist stance. The articles in the book were written during her tenure as an exhibition curator at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (1989–2002, now transferred to the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art as a curator). They include exhibition catalog essays and photographic reviews on modern and contemporary photography in the West, including Japan. During her time at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Ms. Kishihara curated numerous high-quality photography exhibitions. These exhibitions covered both artistic practices as pure photography and as contemporary art. These exhibitions not only had a significant impact on the development of contemporary art in Japan but also attracted widespread attention in the international photography and contemporary art communities, establishing her as a key figure in the contemporary Western photography scene.
