Is it normal for a 7-day-old baby to be sleepy?

Patient's question:

The baby is only seven days old. Everything else is fine, and the check-up showed everything was normal. The only issue is that the baby has been sleeping all the time, basically not waking up for five to six hours a day. I want to know if it's normal for a seven-day-old newborn to be sleepy?

Doctor's answer:

Just seven days old, the baby primarily focuses on sleep, needing about 20 to 22 hours of sleep per day. As long as the child is alert and in good spirits, eating normally, without vomiting or diarrhea, there is no issue. If the baby is in good spirits, eating well, and urinating and defecating normally, it is perfectly normal for the baby to love sleeping. There is no need to worry. If breastfeeding, it is recommended to feed on demand. The mother should also focus on strengthening her nutrition.
