Patient's question:
Recently, during a detailed ultrasound examination, mild varicocele was found. The diameter of the left spermatic vein was 2.0 mm, with tortuous course of the lumen and continuous rich blood flow signals. Under increased abdominal pressure, the vein further widened to 2.2 mm, with recurrent short-term reflux signals.Doctor's answer:
Varicocele is a congenital defect in the development of the spermatic vein, where venous valve insufficiency leads to blood stasis, causing the veins to gradually dilate and become varicose. Since varicocele can lower the local temperature of the testes and impair sperm vitality, it may affect fertility in a small number of individuals. To achieve a complete cure, it is recommended to undergo a high ligation surgery for varicocele. Medications can only suppress the dilation but cannot provide a permanent cure. Currently, there are three surgical approaches for varicocele: traditional, laparoscopic, and microscopic. The microscopic approach is the best, with an extremely low recurrence rate.
