A must-read for teenage girls and their parents, it’s a guide filled with practical advice, empowering a healthy and positive attitude toward life. What am I writing a book for teenage girls? You know, I’m old enough to be your mother! But in my view, growing up is learning to take care of your body and emotions, cultivating healthy and beneficial relationships between you and yourself, you and your body, and you and the people around you. For some of us, like me, it took quite a long time to achieve this. When I started working on this book, I realized that the topics faced by teenage girls and women are similar, and the process of growing up can last a lifetime. I know it took me a while to learn to take care of my body by combining exercise and rest, to eat well without worrying about my figure, to choose friends who are equal and mutually beneficial (and how to treat the opposite). I learned to leave sex for the person who is crucial to me, to handle anxiety and despair, to be more determined and confident and less eager to please, and to know how not to be crushed by mistakes after making them. In short, I discovered who I am, learned to love her, and can say what I want and need. I understand that the world today is more complex than the 1960s when I grew up, and girls live in all sorts of different situations far beyond my experience. How should we spend our lives? There are no rules, no right or wrong, everyone’s life journey is different. Still, I remain confident that you will find something meaningful in this book. As they say, you’ll only realize what you need when you need it.
