Prostate enlargement: Which supplements to take

Patient's question:

Frequent urination is an early sign of benign prostatic hyperplasia. I'm 50 years old now, and I have frequent urination and increased nocturia. My urination is still somewhat difficult. It turns out I have benign prostatic hyperplasia. Which supplements should I take for prostatic hypertrophy?

Doctor's answer:

The prostate gland is located between the bladder and the pelvic floor. The base of the prostate is adjacent to the bladder neck, seminal vesicles, and ampulla of the vas deferens. Anteriorly, it is bounded by the pubic symphysis, and posteriorly, by the rectal ampulla. During a digital rectal exam, the posterior surface of the prostate can be palpated to confirm its enlargement and determine its extent, as well as to touch the ampulla of the vas deferens and seminal vesicles. In children, the prostate gland grows rapidly during the pubertal phase. In elderly individuals, the prostate atrophies and expands. If connective tissue fibers develop within the gland, it results in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Currently, clinical diagnosis primarily involves a combination of physical therapy and medication to achieve a more ideal outcome. Patients with prostate hyperplasia should avoid drinking strong alcohol, consuming spicy, fatty, and sweet foods, limiting coffee intake, and avoiding acidic foods such as citrus and orange juice. Additionally, they should reduce consumption of refined sugar and flour.
