Studies onLiterature and American Literature. Issue 4

Author: None

Publishing Date: None
Features: In this issue of the "Forum," the proportion of American literature studies still significantly outweighs British literature, which has been a common phenomenon in the past four issues. This, to some extent, reflects the current state of Anglo-American literature studies in China in recent years. In British literature studies, two articles focus on Shakespeare. Another discusses Virginia Woolf's modernist concept of time and space, while another examines James Joyce's exploration and application of multiple voices in "Ulysses." Although these articles all take small starting points, micro-level perspectives often have the potential to convey profound meanings. For example, Chen Lei's article on the function of clowns in Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" may appear to discuss only one play, but it actually touches upon numerous aesthetic issues such as the game-like nature of drama, the non-realism of comedy, the distinctions between comedy and tragedy or comedy and melodrama, and the role of theatrical conventions in breaking through the illusion of the stage.
