This school, without formal organization, was named after the influential collection of essays he compiled titled "Discussions on Ancient History." In the field of historical geography, he was also the founder of the "Yu Gong" school. Although this school had an organization called the Yu Gong Society, it was primarily named after the significant social impact of the journal "Yu Gong," which he co-founded with Tan Qixiang. Gu's research on ancient history involved myths, literature, folklore, and ballads of ancient times. In these fields, his studies made pioneering contributions, establishing him as one of the outstanding founders in modern Chinese mythology, classical literature, folklore, and folk art research.
