Publish Date: 2004-07-01
Features: The processed "enlarged" edition of Maxims contains 641 maxims, with its content equivalent to a work of moral psychology. However, La Rochefoucauld did not intend to compile a collection of norms and precepts to tell people what they should or should not do. Instead, through the analysis and description of people's behavioral qualities, he exposed what people were actually doing and thinking. La Rochefoucauld believed that what people call "virtue" is often just a collection of certain behaviors and various interests. This idea forms the tone of his entire Maxims. The content of this book includes Preface "Three Thoughts" Translation Committee of the Collection, Address to the Readers, the 1678 edition of Maxims, Leftout Maxims, Deleted Maxims, Appendix: The index table compiled by La Rochefoucauld for the 1678 edition, La Rochefoucauld's Chronology, La Rochefoucauld and his Maxims.
