Features: Since the Tang and Song dynasties, the erhu has continuously evolved and developed over a long historical journey. After the Ming and Qing dynasties, it became the main accompanying instrument for various local operas and folk arts in China. Especially since the 1920s, Mr. Liu Tianhua composed 10 erhu solo pieces and 47 erhu etudes, laying the foundation for the professionalization of the erhu and elevating it to the concert stage, making it a widely played solo instrument. Since the 1950s, with the rapid development of folk music, new erhu pieces have emerged like bamboo shoots after rain, greatly promoting the development of erhu art. Creation is one of the important driving forces pushing forward erhu art. But for me, creation can only be considered a sideline; my main work is teaching and performing. As early as 1960, when I served as an erhu teacher at the Central Conservatory of Music, new training content such as fast techniques needed to be added to the erhu teaching materials, so I gradually composed a series of erhu etudes. In 1972, after I moved to the China National Folk Music Orchestra as the concertmaster, I collaborated with colleagues like Li Xiukui to create and arrange some erhu solo, ensemble, and chamber music pieces to enrich the orchestra's performances and radio and television broadcasts. As can be seen, creation is always closely linked to my work in teaching and performing.
