What is the function of the prostate?

Patient's question:

Father suffered from painful urination, his face turned red, and he wanted to know what function the prostate has in men.

Doctor's answer:

The physiological function of the prostate is primarily endocrine. The prostate contains abundant 5α-reductase, which can convert testosterone into more physiologically active dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone plays a significant role in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia. By inhibiting 5α-reductase, the production of dihydrotestosterone can be reduced, thereby causing the fibrotic prostate tissue to shrink.
It also has loading and unloading functions. The urethra and two ejaculatory ducts pass through the of the prostate. During ejaculation, the muscles of the prostate and seminal vesicles contract, pressing the contents of the vas deferens and seminal vesicles through the ejaculatory ducts into the posterior urethra, and then expelling them outside the body.
