Publish Date: 2003-08-01
Features: Ancient China was not lacking in renowned great travelers. Zhang Qian of the Han Dynasty was sent to the Western Regions, Fǎxiǎn of the Jin Dynasty and Xuánzàng of the Tang Dynasty both went to the Buddhist holy land of India, Zheng He of the Ming Dynasty made seven voyages to the Western Oceans. However, either they were sent on missions by the emperor or sought the true scriptures for religious beliefs, with the main purpose not being geographical exploration. Only Xu Xiake can be regarded as a geographer and explorer in ancient Chinese history. What is even more admirable is that his exploration activities did not receive any official financial support and were carried out at his own expense.
