Features: Huberman, the German, smiled contentedly. He cheerfully said something to the lieutenant and then took out a telescope to scan the vast plain. They had raced back and forth across this rolling plain at high speed, then walked to the center of the plain, selected a spot by the grassy riverbank, and rested. Huberman, Freyts, Schenando, walked along a dimly lit path in the Black Forest, drenched in sweat and utterly exhausted. His head was large and round, with a thick chin and neck. The lieutenant walked beside him, while Lieutenant Heide, Gjon, Goss, led a few African soldiers, driving the porters forward. Under the command of this white lieutenant officer, the African black soldiers, regardless of the porters who were already exhausted, forced them forward with gleaming bayonets and heavy iron butts.
