Features: "Sometimes I was very close to death." Michael Jordan later reflected on his childhood life this way. In the second half of 1961, Troi moved with her two sons and one daughter to Brooklyn, New York, with her husband, James Jordan, for a short stay. James Jordan, the 24-year-old son of a southern tenant farmer, had just completed his military service and was here to participate in a two-year vocational training program mandated by the G.I. Bill, learning to manufacture, repair, and service hydraulic equipment. Troi stayed in the black apartment building to take care of the children. It was during this time that she became pregnant with her third son, Michael. The little one was anything but calm; he often kicked his tiny legs inside his mother's womb, danced excitedly with his hands, and kicked wildly when he was unhappy. Troi had a premonition that he would definitely not be a "light sleeper" and would be quite mischievous. Listening to her wife's sweet complaints, James replied with a smile: "It's normal for boys to be mischievous; if they weren't, something would be wrong. Parents would be even more anxious!" At that time, there was no fetal gender identification technology, but they were both certain it would be a boy.
Unfortunate news came from the couple's hometown of North Carolina: their mother-in-law had passed away suddenly from an illness. James took leave from his training program and returned to the southern mother-in-law's home with the older children to handle the funeral arrangements. The pregnant Troi initially decided not to go, but she suddenly changed her mind and insisted on returning to bid farewell to her mother one last time. The whole family hurriedly boarded a train to North Carolina.
It was the height of summer, and Troi had been immersed in moving emotional recollections of her early years living with her unfortunate mother. Both physically and mentally, she had become very fragile. She fell ill on the train. After the doctor examined her, he told her and her husband: "How could you be so careless? You almost had a miscarriage! If you get pregnant again, you must never travel in the heat of summer!" The couple was chilled to the bone. Michael Jordan's life had been miraculously saved.
On February 17, 1963, Jordan's fourth child was born at a Catholic hospital in Brooklyn, New York. The newborn was as black as coal and very thin, looking as though he wouldn't have much strength. When he cried, he kicked and struggled, his voice so loud that it could be heard throughout the building. After a lively fuss, he finally fell into a sweet sleep with his tired mother. When he woke up and wasn't crying, his eyes were very alert, rolling constantly, and he was sensitive to colors and sounds. He quickly recognized his older brother Roni, his sister Tройс, and his two-year-old brother Larry.
