Features: ; Courtyard vegetable gardening is an important component of household economies in rural China. With the gradual reduction in per capita arable land, making full use of idle spaces in front of and behind houses or developing small-scale family vegetable gardens on small plots of land can not only supplement market supply and increase household income but also optimize and beautify the environment, promoting the construction of civilized villages. At the same time, urban and suburban residents are growing courtyard vegetables on rooftops and balconies, producing fresh seasonal vegetables tailored to their tastes. This enriches people's vegetable baskets while also beautifying residential environments and cultivating character. Therefore, courtyard vegetable gardening has become a vital path for hardworking people in both urban and rural areas across China to achieve prosperity and a well-off life. Year-round production, balanced supply of high-quality, pollution-free vegetables, and a rich variety of options are the goals that vegetable workers strive to achieve. Creating suitable environmental conditions for vegetable growth is the key to high-yield, high-quality cultivation. Compared to large-scale vegetable field production, courtyard microclimates offer better conditions, stronger disaster resistance, and flexibility in adjusting planting types and varieties. The area can be large or small, management is meticulous, operations are flexible, and it is highly intensive in both material and technology, yielding excellent economic and social benefits. Because of the of courtyard vegetable gardening, it is even more important to emphasize the learning and application of basic vegetable knowledge and scientific technology, ensuring that courtyard vegetables truly achieve the production goal of "having what others don’t, having what others have but better, continuously innovating, and winning through surprise." This will allow the splendid flower of courtyard vegetable gardening to shine even brighter in the construction of vegetable basket programs.
In pursuit of this goal, we have organized the writing of this book at the invitation of China Agricultural Publishing House. Focusing on courtyard planting and moderate-scale production, the book introduces courtyard environmental conditions, the similarities and differences between courtyard vegetable gardening and large-scale vegetable field production, courtyard planning and layout, crop rotation arrangements, and practical protective facilities. On this foundation, it provides a detailed introduction to the seedling and planting techniques for suitable vegetables in courtyards. Centered around the goal of high-yield, high-quality vegetable production, the book highlights the integration of new achievements and practical techniques, with a particular emphasis on agricultural biological control to reduce pesticide harm and pollution, thereby achieving pollution-free vegetable production.
