Features: A century ago, Sichuan Province (as referred to in this book, including present-day Chongqing) was remote and poorly connected, yet rich in resources and blessed with talented individuals. The long-standing Bashu culture nurtured the diligence, courage, and global-mindedness of the Sichuan people, giving rise to renowned figures such as Li Bing, Yang Xiong, Sima Xiangru, and Zou Rong. In distant France, some of them saved and spent their hard-earned francs on tuition, attending various schools and acquiring specialized knowledge in France, Belgium, and other countries. Upon returning, they served their nation, making outstanding contributions to modernization and also achieving significant accomplishments in cultural exchanges, particularly Sino-French cultural exchange. In distant France, some of them were influenced by scientific socialism, joined the Communist Youth League or the Communist Party, and took the path of revolution. There were as many as 90 Sichuan-born youth who participated in the League of Chinese Communist Youth in Europe and the European Branch of the Communist Party of China. They once engaged in large-scale anti-imperialist and patriotic movements in France, Belgium, and other countries before dedicating themselves to the vigorous New Democratic Revolution in China.
