Features: The continuous development of China's economy has driven sustained growth in demand for art and design education, leading to rapid expansion in the field. Statistics show that over 1,000 universities across the country now offer art and design programs, with annual graduates exceeding 100,000. In just a few years, art and design has become the second-largest higher education major in China after computer science. After experiencing rapid quantitative growth, the quality of art and design education has become a focal point of public attention. As Yang Shuzi, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, advocate of humanities education, and professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, said: "For the great cause of the century, talent is fundamental; for the great cause of talent, education is fundamental; for the great cause of education, teachers are fundamental; for the great cause of teachers, teaching is fundamental; for the great cause of teaching, teaching materials are fundamental." To improve the level of art and design education and make it more responsive to societal needs, it is crucial to quickly enhance discipline construction, establish a scientific teaching system tailored to talent market demands, and develop high-quality, systematic teaching materials. Based on requests from many universities nationwide, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Press, under the leadership of the national elite course responsible person, organized renowned experts in art and design education from dozens of universities and the lead instructors of elite courses to jointly develop the "Elite Art and Design Teaching Materials for Higher Education." Combining practical experiences from elite course construction, the experts conducted in-depth discussions on teaching philosophies in art and design, as well as the fundamental knowledge and skills students must master in basic and specialized courses. After reviewing a large number of existing art and design textbooks, they reached the following consensus on how to create systematic, clearly positioned, user-friendly, and high-quality art and design teaching materials:
1. Art and design education should first adhere to the characteristics of design disciplines, employing scientific methods to optimize knowledge structures and construct a well-aligned educational system that meets training objectives. This will enable the effective transmission of fundamental problem-solving methods in the discipline and, through the delivery of core theoretical knowledge, cultivate essential abilities (including innovation and practical skills) and qualities. Emphasis should be placed on fostering students' sense of social responsibility, strengthening the idea that design serves society and humanity, thereby cultivating advanced design talent that meets the needs of both the discipline and society.
2. Teaching in basic art and design courses should move away from traditional art education models, highlight distinctive design concepts, reflect the unique characteristics of the art and design major, and explore foundational education models that meet the demands of applied and design-oriented talent in the 21st century.
3. Art and design is a highly practical discipline, and society requires a large number of applied design professionals. Therefore, textbook development should prioritize professional foundational theories while emphasizing practicality.
4. Art and design is a form of creative labor. Teaching methods should employ case-based instruction to analyze and inspire students, helping them understand design processes and the of art and design, thereby mastering its principles and fostering creativity in design.
5. Art and design is the integration of science, technology, and culture, serving as a core link in transforming production and an indispensable component in building a harmonious society. The essence of art and design lies in innovation, utility, and aesthetics. Students should be guided to grasp design principles and cultivate innovative design thinking through practical training.
6. The "Elite Art and Design Teaching Materials for Higher Education" will leverage the advantages of Huazhong University of Science and Technology Press to develop various supporting electronic publications, including electronic teaching plans, teaching networks, and supplementary exercise books, to enhance the effectiveness of the textbooks in teaching, reflect the needs of educational reform, and support the construction of elite courses in higher education.
