How to care for a child with cerebral palsy

Patient's question:

My child is not very active and does not cry or fuss easily like other children of the same age. When other children start walking, he could not even crawl yet, and he could not speak a few words either. After visiting the hospital, the doctor said it was infantile cerebral palsy. How should infantile cerebral palsy be cared for?

Doctor's answer:

The causes of cerebral palsy in children are many and may occur during birth, before birth, or in the neonatal period after birth. However, not all children with these causes develop cerebral palsy, so these factors can only be considered risk factors for the condition. Children with cerebral palsy should avoid rough foods in their diet and have their food adjusted in terms of color, aroma, and taste to ensure proper nutrition. High-calorie, high-protein, and vitamin-rich, easily digestible foods should be provided. For children who have difficulty eating independently, feeding training should be conducted. When feeding, do not force the spoon if the child's teeth are clenched, to avoid damaging their teeth. Keep the child's head in a central position during feeding. If the child is fed upside down, it may lead to the inhalation of foreign objects. Teach the child to eat and move away from others' feeding as soon as possible.
