Preparation
Per Child: 1 small basket, several tongs; rainbow (previously spread by assistant teachers at the other end of the venue).
Process
1. The teacher creates a scenario and introduces the activity.
The teacher clutches a tongs and pretends to be a "swimming fish": "Look, the little fish are swimming! Oh no, the little fish are so hungry. Let's feed them! Let's go find some yummy food!"
The teacher leads the parents and babies to the other end of the venue, clutches the tail end of the tongs firmly, and shows the babies the opening and closing of the tongs' head. Then, the teacher clips the tongs onto the edge of the rainbow while imitating the fish's voice: "Awww, this is so delicious!"
2. Guide the babies to play the game.
The teacher shows a basket containing tongs and tells the babies: "There are still many little fish that haven't eaten yet! Let's feed them too!" The teacher asks the parents and babies to sit on the floor outside the rainbow and gives each baby a small basket of tongs. With the parents' help, the babies feed the "little fish" (by clipping the tongs onto the rainbow).
Once the babies have clipped all the tongs, the teacher asks the parents to lift the edge of the rainbow and gently shake it up and down. The teacher demonstrates how to pinch the tail end of the tongs and pull them down firmly into the basket while saying, "Oh no, the little fish are about to escape! Let me catch them." The teacher prompts the babies: "Come help me catch the little fish! Put the caught fish into the basket!"
Guide the babies to stand up and catch the "little fish." The teacher reminds the parents to gently shake the umbrella edge so the babies can reach the tongs.
The parents help the babies count how many fish they caught and praise and affirm them with hugs or kisses.
3. End the game, and ask the parents to assist the babies in gathering the baskets and tongs.
