Features: The Spark Series of Memory Techniques has won praise from a vast number of readers since its publication, thanks to its undeniable effectiveness in speed memorization. We sincerely thank you for your love of Spark, for your unwavering support and encouragement over the years, and for the valuable suggestions and feedback you have provided in tens of thousands of letters. This book is the seventh edition of the Spark Series. For this revision, we fully incorporated the opinions and suggestions of readers, revised the book based on the New Vocabulary List for College English Teaching Program issued by the Ministry of Education (hereinafter referred to as "the Program"), and adapted to the trends of the College English Test Band 4 and Band 6. It retains the essence of the original book while enriching its content, improving its format, and making it more distinctive:
Comprehensive—More Comprehensive Content:
The book includes a full range of words, covering all vocabulary, phrases, and some extra-curricular words listed in the "Program." Each word is meticulously explained, with nouns marked as countable (C) or uncountable (U), irregular noun plurals, past forms and past participles of irregular verbs, and synonyms and antonyms listed under the definitions to help readers reinforce their memory. Explanations of word usage, collocations, and distinctions are detailed. New and abundant example sentences have been added under "familiar words with unfamiliar meanings," difficult words, and all phrases, including many famous quotes, excellent sentences, and proverbs, to leverage contextual memory. This helps readers not only remember but also use the words effectively. In short, we strive for comprehensiveness, accuracy, and meticulousness.
At the strong request of many readers, this revision includes audio content, featuring nearly a thousand sentences of words and spoken examples (marked with a disc icon). These are read by professional native speakers with clear pronunciation. This allows readers to read and listen simultaneously, improving vocabulary and listening/speaking skills in sync.
Easy—Easier to Memorize:
We further refined the original Spark memory methods, adding numerous illustrated memory techniques and "one-sentence distinctions" to fully leverage the unique advantages of the Spark memory method, enabling readers to achieve outstanding and well-deserved speed memorization results.
Lively—More Engaging Format:
The original Spark layout has been improved, with over 500 new illustrations, charts, and flashcards added, all created with computer graphics to enhance visual appeal. The book is now rich in visuals, lively, and interesting.
Convenient—Easier to Use:
A vocabulary index is included for easy reference, giving the book the functionality of a reference tool. To meet the different needs of the College English Band 4 and Band 6 exams, at the request of readers, we have marked each word with its level to help students study more targetedly. The symbols are as follows:
- (E) — Elementary Degree (Basic Level) (Vocabulary before entering university)
- (I) — Intermediate Degree (Intermediate Level) (College English Band 4)
- (A) — Advanced Degree (Advanced Level) (College English Band 6)
△ Words without a mark are extra-curricular vocabulary.
Additionally, at the launch of the new book, we considered that while the original book was comprehensive, it had drawbacks like being bulky and not portable. Therefore, we removed example sentences and synonyms/antonyms from the original book, introducing a condensed, portable "Essentials Edition" series to meet the needs of different readers.
