Chinese modern and contemporary calligraphy and painting masters' seals and inscriptions

Author: Institute of Art Research, Chinese Academy of Arts
Publisher:
Publication Date: 1998-08-01
Features: From ancient times to the present, calligraphers and painters have generally had names, courtesy names, and sobriquets, and even aliases and studio names. The signatures and inscriptions on artworks themselves are a form of "calligraphy." Distinguishing their authenticity is as important as the paintings themselves. This book, from the perspective of academic research, is the first to collect approximately 3,000 seals and 500 inscriptions of 466 famous modern and contemporary Chinese calligraphers and painters. Each calligrapher and painter is listed with their original name, former names, courtesy name, alias, place of origin, birth and death years, studio name, workplace, current residence, and published works in their personal resumes. This book not only provides scholars with reliable and valuable materials for appreciation, making it a comprehensive and practical reference book; at the same time, the compilation of different calligraphic styles (signatures) and seal carving art from various masters also gives the book a certain independent aesthetic value. More importantly, this book fills the gaps in the history of modern Chinese art and the history of collection and appreciation, making it a reference book for art historians, collectors, and critics; it also holds significant importance in art history research and domestic and international academic exchanges.
