Features: This book is a research outcome of the Ministry of Education's "Reform Plan for Teaching Content and Curriculum Systems in Higher Education Towards the 21st Century," and is part of the "21st Century Curriculum Textbooks" as well as the Ministry of Education's "Key Textbooks for the 9th Five-Year Plan." It is revised based on the fourth edition of "General Chemistry." The book emphasizes fundamental theories and knowledge in chemistry, focuses on the connection with engineering practice, pays attention to social and life hot topics, and emphasizes quality education. The book is divided into eight chapters. Chapters 1 to 4 are primarily centered on the basic principles of chemical reactions and chemical reactions, introducing thermodynamics, chemical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, water chemistry, and electrochemistry, while also incorporating discussions on energy, air pollution, water pollution, and metal corrosion. Chapters 5 to 8 are centered on the theory of material structure and material properties, using the latest achievements in theoretical chemistry to introduce the structures and characteristics of atoms, molecules, biological macromolecules, supramolecules, crystals, and their relationships with the periodic table. It also covers element chemistry, inorganic materials, polymer compounds and materials, and life and health. Each chapter includes a summary of content and learning objectives, supplementary materials, a conclusion, recommended reading outside of class, review questions, and exercises (including some optional exercises marked with an asterisk and open-ended questions marked with a triangle). The book also provides answers to exercises and appendices at the end. This book can be used as a textbook for non-chemical engineering majors in higher vocational and technical schools.
The second edition (revised in 1981) of this book won the first prize of the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Textbooks Award for Higher Education in the 5th National Higher Education Period (1976–1985) in 1986. The third edition was awarded the National Excellence Award for General Higher Education Textbooks in the second period (1986–1989) in 1992. The fourth edition was honored with the second prize of the Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Progress Award in 1999.
