Features: This book is part of the "New Reading and Writing Series for Middle School Students," featuring "fresh" selections that are appropriately short or long, with varying levels of difficulty. It includes renowned works and new creations by emerging authors, award-winning pieces, and timely essays. Some works are deeply moving, others hilarious; some thought-provoking, others imaginative. Immersed in these texts, readers can travel through ancient times, explore the present, and envision the future. Reading this book will provide wisdom and help you become a writing master! The renowned Chinese language educator, Professor Lu Shuxiang, once pointed out: "To improve students' reading skills, a thin textbook alone is insufficient." "Read extensively—both intensive and skimming—reading 800,000 to 1 million words in a semester is not excessive." This book aims to provide readers with reading materials. It is the second volume of the "New Reading and Writing Series," featuring 100 outstanding essays, allowing readers to engage in heartfelt conversations with leading authors, sharing openly and drawing wisdom, strength, and joy from the excellent works.
On July 4th, we received several phone calls in a row, all asking where the second volume of the "New Reading and Writing Series" could be purchased. Two eager readers even pressed further: When would the second volume be released, and when could they start reading it? We clearly saw the readers' eager and expectant gaze.
Recently, the editorial office has been exceptionally busy. On one hand, we are collaborating with the Central Institute of Educational Sciences to organize research activities on "Traditional Culture and Chinese Language Learning." On the other hand, we are actively preparing manuscripts for the October issue of "New Reading and Writing," a special edition dedicated to commemorating Lu Xun. Originally, we planned to shift the editing of the second volume to the golden autumn of October. However, the encouragement and urging of our readers changed our original plans.
The day after the editorial office returned from a visit to Changsha to examine Hunan TV, which is famous for launching "Super Girl," the editing work for the series was launched ahead of schedule.
These days, Shanghai is experiencing its hottest period. Yet, the enthusiasm of our colleagues in the editorial office seems even higher. After about ten days of hard work and sweat, the manuscripts for the four books—"100 Recommended by Experts," "100 Exquisite Short Essays," "100 Masterpieces of Writing," and "100 Beautiful Student Essays"—were completed and promptly delivered to the publisher. This way, before the 2006 new academic year begins, the second volume of the series will happily grace the shelves.

"Read extensively—both intensive and skimming—reading 800,000 to 1 million words in a semester is not excessive." This time, we have released four books in the second volume, totaling approximately 800,000 words, enough for students to enjoy throughout the semester.
Reading is a happiness. In the new academic year, we hope to share the joy of reading with our students, engaging in heartfelt conversations with leading authors, openly exchanging ideas, and drawing wisdom, strength, and joy from excellent works.
