Features: On July 4th, we received several phone calls in a row, all asking where to buy the "New Reading and Writing" series. Two impatient readers even inquired when the second series would be published, hoping to read it as soon as possible. We clearly saw the readers' eager and expectant gaze. Recently, the editorial office has been unusually busy—on one hand, collaborating with the Central Institute of Educational Sciences to organize research activities on "Traditional Culture and Chinese Language Learning," and on the other hand, actively preparing manuscripts for the October issue of "New Reading and Writing" titled "Commemorating Lu Xun." Originally, we planned to move the editing work of the second series to the golden autumn of October. However, the encouragement and urging of the readers changed our original arrangement. The day after the editorial office returned from a visit to Changsha to examine Hunan TV, which is famous for launching "Super Girl," the editing work of the series was launched ahead of schedule.
These days are the height of Shanghai's summer heat. Yet, the enthusiasm of the editorial office colleagues seems even higher. After a dozen days of hard work and sweat, the manuscripts of the four books—100 Recommended by Famous Writers, 100 Exquisite Short Essays, 100 Masterpieces of Composition, and 100 Beautiful Student Essays—were all completed and promptly sent to the publisher. This way, before the 2006 new school year begins, the second series will happily grace the bookshelves.
Renowned Chinese language educator Lu Shuxiang once pointed out, "To improve students' reading skills, a thin textbook alone is not enough," and "One must read extensively, with both intensive and extensive reading. Reading 800,000 to 1 million words in a semester is not excessive." This time, we have launched four books in the second series, totaling about 800,000 words, enough for students to enjoy throughout the semester.
Reading is a happiness. In the new school year, we hope to share the joy of reading with students, engaging in heartfelt dialogues with outstanding authors, opening our minds to exchange, and drawing wisdom, strength, and joy from excellent writings.
