Features: This running-script Thousand-Character Classic is on silk, measuring 265 mm in height and 3734 mm in width, and is now preserved in the Palace Museum. The title at the beginning is inscribed in seal script by Xu Lin of the Ming Dynasty with the four characters "Song Xue Thousand Characters." The scroll is followed by postscripts from numerous scholars, including Zhang Yu, Zhao Yong, Zhao Yi, Huang Gongwang of the Yuan Dynasty, and Mo Yunqing, Zhang Xiang, Zhan Jingfeng, and Xu Lin of the Ming Dynasty. The seals collected include "Jiaqing Imperial Inspection Seal," "Qianlong Imperial Inspection Seal," and "Xuantong Imperial Inspection Seal," among others.
Zhao Mengquan once said, "In the past twenty years, I have written thousands of copies of the Thousand-Character Classic," demonstrating his diligent dedication to calligraphy. This scroll is one of his late works in running script, initially written in regular script before gradually evolving into running script. The Ming Dynasty calligrapher Zhan Jingfeng remarked, "This scroll exhibits ancient and elegant, round and smooth, and noble calligraphic style, a masterpiece of his official duties." The Ming Dynasty calligrapher Mo Yunqing commented, "The ancients said that within ten thousand miles in all directions and across centuries, there were no calligraphic works by Chengzhi (Zhao Mengquan). Upon viewing this scroll, one can indeed see why."
Twelve years ago, our publishing house published a monochrome print of this running-script Thousand-Character Classic. Today, twelve years later, we are pleased to release its color-printed edition, providing calligraphy enthusiasts with an opportunity to study, appreciate, and admire this remarkable work.
