In 1956, he became a disciple of the renowned crosstalk artist Wang Shichen to study crosstalk performance. In 1968, he became a disciple of the famous storytelling artist Li Xinquan to study storytelling performance. He successively created and performed short storytelling pieces such as "Underwater Green Pine" and "Standing on the Wind Cloud," winning multiple awards in Beijing's amateur performances. For Tian Zhanyi's achievements in storytelling about modern history, experts such as Wang Jingshou, Wang Jue, and Zeng Huijie wrote in the book "Eastern Culture Integration: On the Art of Chinese Storytelling" in the "Commentary on Famous Artists" section: "Tian Zhanyi is one of the most accomplished storytellers in recent years when it comes to storytelling about modern history." The storytelling "Comprehensive Mirror of Ancient and Modern Times" is adapted from China's classical novel "Three Words" (including "Allusions to Worldly Wisdom," "Sermons for the World," and "Everlasting Sermons"). After years of research and performance practice, the renowned storyteller Tian Zhanyi recorded this collection of short storytelling pieces, processing, organizing, and adapting them based on historical materialism, with new ideas, perspectives, and techniques. The collection consists of five stories, totaling seventy chapters, with a total running time of over three and a half hours. This storytelling was once broadcast on the radio and received unanimous praise from a broad audience. It is an excellent work that promotes national cultural art and inherits and develops cultural heritage.
