Features: Tian Lianyuan, a renowned storytelling artist, is currently the president of the Liaoning Province Quyi Association. Born in Changchun in 1941, Tian Lianyuan was intelligent and eager to learn from a young age. At 17, he began performing long-story storytelling on stage. In 1965, he gained recognition at the Liaoning Province Quyi Performance Competition for his self-written and performed storytelling piece "Chasing the Train and Sending the Telegraph." Later, he became famous both domestically and internationally for telling stories such as "The Yang Family," "The Legend of Liu Xiu," and "Water Margin." In 1985, he pioneered the first televised serial storytelling with "The Yang Family." Tian Lianyuan's storytelling is innovative in technique, emphasizes literary quality, and is witty and humorous. His performances are graceful and distinctive, forming a unique style. He understands the art of storytelling, conveys the emotions of the story, and possesses strong literary depth. While inheriting the fine traditions of storytelling, he boldly innovates, creating a distinctive style. His storytelling is hailed as "a three-dimensional novel."
Hai Rui (1514–1587), styled Ruyuan, was a native of Qiongshan. He was a scholar and a famous incorruptible official of the Ming Dynasty. He held various positions, including county magistrate, deputy prefect, minister of revenue, minister of war, vice minister of state, and right assistant censor-in-chief. Known for his integrity and self-discipline, Hai Rui showed courage in challenging the powerful even when in low positions, never flattering or currying favor. Loyal and fearless in his advice, he once bought a coffin, bid farewell to his wife, and risked his life to submit memorials. Throughout his life, Hai Rui lived in poverty, suppressed the strong, comforted the poor, and fought against corrupt officials, earning deep love from the people. His life story is widely known in folklore. Hai Qingtian tells the story of the Ming Dynasty's incorruptible official Hai Rui. The book begins with Hai Rui traveling to the capital for the imperial examination and staying at a tofu shop owned by the Zhang family. It describes a series of struggles between Hai Rui and the servants, managers, and even the master of the Yan family—Yan Song. The plot is intricate, full of twists, and the language is humorous and concise, offering both literary depth, knowledge, and entertainment. The story builds suspense, features vivid characters, and is a beloved work of storytelling.
Jiang Jingsheng, a seasoned quyi theorist and writer, adapted the original work. Tian Lianyuan further refined it, enhancing its storytelling charm, purity, and listenability.
