Features: China is a literary powerhouse, and classical literature is a magnificent gem that has grown from the soil of our national traditional culture. Our nation's traditional cultural spirit has nurtured it, making it dazzling and fragrant. As one of the forms of classical literature, dramatic art has long been regarded as a tool for moral education on the stage and an instrumental means to reform social customs and rectify people's hearts. For thousands of years, it has nurtured our national culture's spirit of truth, goodness, and beauty with its humanistic spirit of praising virtue and condemning evil, as well as its beautiful national forms. Any nation that belittles its own traditional cultural spirit will be powerless to stand among modern nations; denying or neglecting the inheritance of the spirit of truth, goodness, and beauty in our national culture is tantamount to cutting off its own roots. Without roots, how can there be flourishing flowers and lush leaves! Based on this idea, we invited a group of experts and scholars to rewrite some excellent classical dramas into popular stories, editing this series of "Chinese Classical Literature Story Books" to be released in installments to delight readers.
Li Yu, styled Xuanyu, was also known as Su Xiaolu and the owner of Yi Qian An. He was from Wu County, Jiangsu (now Suzhou). Li Yu was a prolific writer, with 32 recorded works in total. His plays profoundly exposed social realities and delicately portrayed the spirits of characters, widely gaining popularity and acclaim from the general public. Among them, the play "Yi, Ren, Yong, Zhan" was praised by critics for its rich life and intricate plot twists. Other works, such as the highly regarded "Qing Zhong Pu" and "Wan Shi An," are celebrated for their profound ideological depth and realistic critique. "Qing Zhong Pu" is one of his representative works. In the play, he portrays upright and incorruptible officials like Zhou Shunchang, as well as the rebellious, self-sacrificing, and public-spirited lower-class citizens led by Yan Peiwei. The play also criticizes Wei Zhongxian and his cronies for their factionalism, abuse of power, and persecution of the people.
