“Agreed!” Shoudou and Xiumi slapped their palms together.
However, the next morning, Shoudou didn’t get the boiled egg because, although he accompanied Xiumi to the forest behind the house, he soon fell asleep like a dead pig. This made Xiumi not only fail to see the fairy but also had to drag the heavy Shoudou back inside. Xiumi cursed the sleeping Shoudou to death.
When Xiumi realized she had to do this herself, she gathered many green grasses. She placed them in a large basket and dug a big hole in it. Xiumi crawled into the hole at night. The sweet and tender grasses nestled against Xiumi, filling the air with a pleasant scent that made her heart float. She felt like she had turned into a small animal, her body light and agile, dancing under the moonlight, walking and walking.
“Tock, tock, tock.” The fairy really came. The fairy, who had transformed into a small animal, still swayed in the moonlight. The tocking footsteps made her skin tingle. The whimsical shadows of the trees, a nimble little figure, skipped past the basket where Xiumi hid.
Ah! It was a deer! A beautiful little deer!
From that day on, Xiumi had to change the grass in the basket every day. She would sneak a peek at the beautiful deer in the enchanting scent of the grass. The deer would always appear gently, lively, and come to Xiumi’s window, listening intently as if to Shoudou’s heavy snoring. Sometimes, it would suddenly leap in front of Xiumi’s basket, plucking a few grass leaves to chew in its mouth. Xiumi’s heart raced as she thought, “Don’t eat my braids!”
Xiumi, who harbored a beautiful secret, would walk around with the scent of grass on her body every morning. The stronger the grass scent became, the more Xiumi believed she had been a small animal at night.
“I want to dance under the moonlight too. I want to go to a distant place to find a small wooden house where children live. I hope there are two identical children in that house who aren’t as sleepy as Shoudou!” Xiumi imagined what she would do if she turned into a small animal.
After some time, Xiumi believed she could be friends with the deer. One night, when the deer came near the basket, Xiumi slowly stretched her body out. The deer was startled and turned to flee, as if wanting to leave forever. But it stopped at the edge of the forest. The scent of grass on Xiumi made the deer feel at ease, and it stopped, its gentle black eyes looking back at Xiumi obediently. Xiumi climbed out of the basket and sang a lovely song in a low voice, offering a bundle of tender grass to the deer. After thinking for a moment, the deer accepted it.
Xiumi felt increasingly tired. The days of watching the deer had exhausted her. That night, as soon as Xiumi approached the basket, sleepiness washed over her. She fought it desperately, feeling a black mist spread before her eyes. She was being swallowed by the mist. “This is a dream! This is a dream! I’m going into a dream!” Xiumi tilted to the side of the basket and drifted into a deep sleep.
Just as Xiumi fell asleep, the deer quietly approached. It was already very familiar with Xiumi and looked at the sleeping Xiumi under the moonlight with deep affection. The thick scent of grass wafted from Xiumi, and the deer slowly lay down, resting its head on Xiumi’s legs.
At that moment, in the deer’s heart, Xiumi was truly a deer.
The lonely deer had finally found a good friend. It wanted to be with Xiumi and felt incredibly safe.
