Features: Martin Eden is a sailor of humble origins who meets an upper-class lady, Ruth, by chance. Martin feels inferior and strives to study hard, and he develops a strong desire for creative writing, thus embarks on the path of literary writing. However, the publishing industry rejects his works outright, and Ruth also dashes his hopes. Martin, however, does not give up. Due to differences in class consciousness, Ruth and Martin become increasingly incompatible in their outlook on life and eventually break up with each other.
