On July 9, 2001, at noon, when ordinary university students packed up their backpacks and left the classroom, a special and open "university" quietly began its sessions. It is special because its educational philosophy is "lectures by renowned experts and teachers from home and abroad, covering scientific, humanistic, and social content"; its educational concept is "gathering intellectual elites, sharing educational resources, spreading modern culture, and promoting the spirit of science and humanity"; its pursuit is "to balance theoretical rigor and practicality, authority and avant-garde, pursue academic innovation, encourage individual thought, emphasize accessibility to all, and value interactive communication"; and its goal is "to construct common knowledge of the era and enjoy a life of wisdom." It is open because it has no entrance exams or requirements, has no age or identity restrictions, and the only requirement for admission is "a love of knowledge."
What "university" is this? "The Forum of 100 Experts." Where is "The Forum of 100 Experts"? On Channel 10 of China Central Television. Highly advanced television technology has given humanity a shortcut to such close contact with knowledge! Yang Zhenning, Li Zhengdao, Ding Zhongzhong, Zhou Ruchang, Ye Jialing, Bai Chunli, Li Yining, Feng Jicai, and Yang Jiang—each a resounding name that conveys the spirit of humanity on the stage built by light and shadow. This spirit is the driving force for the continuation of civilization and the foundation of human survival. Let knowledge be tangible, let thoughts be touchable, and let scholars from around the world share in this experience in the sacred hall of light and shadow—with knowledge truly is a blessing.
After more than a thousand sunrises and sunsets, the greatest achievement of "The Forum of 100 Experts" is over 700 heavy tapes. Seven hundred 45-minute segments are quite a long duration for a television program, especially when they record the essence of human thought. How can we promote the essence of human thought? We thought of publishing, a way that is both collectible and conducive to study. With the strong support of China Renmin University Press, we selected the content of 500 lectures to produce CDs and publish them in series; at the same time, we published nearly 30 related books to meet the diverse intellectual needs of those who love knowledge. China Renmin University Press has called this "big move" a "great achievement" in 2004, and we should sincerely express our gratitude for their hard work.
Friends and viewers, let us shake hands in the transmission of knowledge!
