Features: The core of life lies in simple belief.
The core of life can be summarized as simple belief. Everyone's concerns are multifaceted, and in different stages of life, there are different combinations of concerns. Therefore, it is not easy to discern a person's fundamental beliefs. When we interact with others, it may take decades or even a lifetime to truly understand what kind of person they really are. As the ancient saying goes, "Knowing a person's face but not their heart is difficult." Understanding a person's "heart" is difficult. In Chinese history, the famous example of close friends who truly understood each other is Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya. Among the Five Hegemons of the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Huan of Qi was a hegemon. At that time, Bao Shuya helped Duke Huan ascend the throne, while Guan Zhong served the opposition, namely Duke Huan's older brother, Prince Jiu. After Duke Huan officially ascended the throne, he wanted to appoint Bao Shuya as the prime minister, but Bao Shuya strongly recommended Guan Zhong instead. Duke Huan initially did not agree because he thought Guan Zhong was timid and petty in battle and in daily life. However, Bao Shuya defended Guan Zhong, stating that Guan Zhong had to support his elderly mother at home, so he always had worries. Duke Huan finally accepted Bao Shuya's recommendation. After appointing Guan Zhong, he indeed achieved hegemony by "uniting nine states and rectifying the world." This shows that Bao Shuya's understanding of Guan Zhong was not based on superficial factors like whether he was petty or timid, but rather on truly observing his heart and knowing his aspirations. Therefore, when it comes to truth, it often boils down to a person's inner beliefs. Belief is different from faith. We often use terms like "life's faith," "political faith," and "religious faith." In the context of religious faith, it refers to adhering to a specific religion. Belief, on the other hand, is more general—it can be a form of faith but does not necessarily have to be. People without faith can still hold beliefs. For example, "life is meant for service" is a belief. Everyone has their own beliefs, and the important thing is how to let this belief permeate their entire life. Belief can serve as the source of motivation and the foundation of meaning in our lives. Living in the world, life requires motivation. Without motivation, one can easily become exhausted and even make excuses to stop, especially during middle-aged crises. In fact, a person should maintain motivation throughout their life until the very last moment. "The foundation of meaning" refers to how you understand your life. Living is one thing, but living with meaning is another. Only by understanding what your life is about can you live with meaning. P11-12
