Features: Ernst Poppel, Ph.D., Professor, was born in Schweinfurt, Pomerania (now part of Poland), in 1940. He studied literature, history, and philosophy at Freiburg, followed by two years of service in the Bundesmarine (Federal German Navy). From 1962 to 1968, he pursued studies in psychology and zoology in Innsbruck, Freiburg, and Munich, earning his Ph.D. in psychology in 1968. In 1974, he obtained the qualification of professor of sensory physiology at the Medical School of the University of Munich, and in 1976, he was granted the qualification of professor of psychology at the Faculty of Science at the University of Innsbruck. In 1976, he was appointed as a professor of medical psychology at the University of Munich, and in 1977, he became the head of the newly established Department of Medical Psychology. He is currently a key member of the board of directors at the Jülich Research Center, one of Germany's 16 major research centers. Additionally, he serves as a member of the Federal Research Ministry's research committee on "Neurobiology/Neuroinformatics, Artificial Intelligence" and the German Research Association. Professor Poppel's main research areas include: the temporal structure of brain information processing and cognitive processes, functional recovery after brain injury, neuropsychological analysis of residual visual functions, psychological testing during deep anesthesia, and the circadian rhythms of psychological effects. He has published numerous academic papers in scientific publications and has authored many works, including the widely acclaimed book "Joy and Suffering: The Basis of Human Experience and Behavior," published in 1982. The Chinese newspaper "Science and Technology Daily" has specially introduced Professor Poppel's research achievements in psychology.
