Is the varicocele severe?

Patient's question:

Is varicocele serious, and what causes it? How did my brother get this disease? He's been married for about two years now, and my brother and sister-in-law haven't had any children yet. The family wants to have a thorough check-up. Then I saw my brother's ultrasound report, which said he has varicocele. Is it very serious? What should he do? Is there a way to treat it?

Doctor's answer:

Varicocele is a common disease in men, characterized by a heavy, distended, and pulling pain in the scrotum, which is more pronounced when standing or moving and can be alleviated by lying down. It can also lead to neurasthenia accompanied by the patient's worries and anxieties, resulting in emotional instability, fatigue, and neurasthenia, among other symptoms. In men with varicocele, approximately two-thirds may experience abnormal semen, with a small proportion of these cases potentially causing infertility.
