Is varicocele congenital?

Patient's question:

I have been married for three years, but my wife hasn't been pregnant. She had a thorough check-up and said her health is fine. Later, I had a thorough check-up, and surprisingly, it was found that I have an ectopic testicle. There are no symptoms, and I didn't even know about this condition. Is an ectopic testicle congenital?

Doctor's answer:

The epididymis is a fine, long, and flattened duct that connects to the testes and is located posteriorly and laterally to the testes. 10 to 15 testicular efferent ductules coil into a conical shape, and their ends merge into a single epididymal duct that is 4 to 6 cm long and highly coiled. The cause of the condition is generally believed to be the failure or incomplete development of the mesonephric duct, making it congenital. For patients with epididymitis, timely treatment can reduce the occurrence of the condition. If left untreated, it can affect overall health. Therefore, patients should receive timely medication treatment.
