Author: (Austrian) Freud
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2004-11-01
Features: The original title of this book is "Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality," which, following "The Interpretation of Dreams," became another work with a significant global impact. It was the first to apply psychoanalytic methods to the study of specific psychological issues. Scientific, comprehensive, rational, and profound. Preface to the Fifth Edition Over the past decade, I have been observing the impact of this book and the extent to which it has been recognized by readers. On the occasion of the reprint of the third edition, I would like to write a short preface to clarify some misunderstandings and to explain some of my unfulfilled wishes. I must clarify that the views expounded in this book are entirely based on everyday medical observations, and the findings of psychoanalytic research enhance its scientific validity. "On Sexuality" can only contain what is necessary for the needs of psychoanalysis and cannot be extended into an all-encompassing "theory of sexuality." It is natural that many important issues in life are not fully addressed. However, readers should understand that the author is not entirely unaware of these matters or considers them unimportant. To clarify, the book's selection of topics and the arrangement of its materials are all based on psychoanalytic observations. Since the importance of various factors differs, the order of arrangement also differs. Take constitutional factors as an example—there is a greater emphasis on accidental factors, which I believe are more important than racial or individual characteristics. Accidental factors play a very important role in the analysis: the analysis is almost entirely influenced by accidental factors. Constitutional factors, on the other hand, are secondary because they only become apparent through experience. Of course, the scope beyond psychoanalysis is also taken into account. The relationship between racial and individual characteristics is similar. It should be said that individual characteristics are the reflection of racial characteristics. However, racial characteristics do not change due to the influence of recent experience, and they play a significant role behind individual development. Individual characteristics are the result of the accumulation of early human experience, combined with recent experience, forming the sum of accidental factors. It must be emphasized that while the book strives to minimize the influence of biology, it is based on psychoanalytic research. I have carefully avoided the views of many experts in the past, whether from general sexual biology or from specialized studies on a particular species. The book, while minimizing the influence of biology, is based on psychoanalytic research. The views it expounds are entirely based on everyday medical observations, with the findings of psychoanalytic research enhancing its scientific validity. My purpose is to explore to what extent the study of psychology can enrich human biological knowledge of sexuality.
