Features: This second edition maintains the writing principles of the edition, still aiming to strengthen fundamental theoretical education, cultivate students' independent thinking and working ability, emphasize foundational aspects, and focus on concise, well-structured, clear, and illustrated teaching content. To preserve the continuity of the textbook, it is still divided into 11 chapters covering morphology, physiology, ecology, genetics, immunity, and classification, with outdated content removed and cutting-edge knowledge added. Since the edition was published in 1998, it has received enthusiastic support from peers and strong assistance from Higher Education Press. It has been reprinted multiple times and, along with other teaching achievements, won the Second Prize of the National Excellent Teaching Achievement Award in 2001 and the First Prize of the Beijing Teaching Achievement Award in 2001. To better adapt to the needs of disciplinary development, we have compiled the second edition, which has been included in the "21st Century Curriculum Textbooks." The second edition maintains the writing principles of the edition, still aiming to strengthen fundamental theoretical education, cultivate students' independent thinking and working ability, emphasize foundational aspects, and focus on concise, well-structured, clear, and illustrated teaching content. To preserve the continuity of the textbook, it is still divided into 11 chapters covering morphology, physiology, ecology, genetics, immunity, and classification, with outdated content removed and cutting-edge knowledge added. A "Research Progress" section has been added at the end of each chapter to provide concise summaries of important studies, enabling readers to grasp the current state of microbiology research. To aid in memorization and facilitate reference, key terms with Chinese-English translations are provided at the end of each chapter, and a Chinese-English translation of microbial names along with an index are included at the end of the book, along with a directory of important international microbiology-related journals. When this book was published, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was spreading in many countries worldwide, so a brief introduction is included in the appendix. To better meet teaching needs, a teaching auxiliary CD-ROM is appended to the book, containing three parts: a learning outline of microbiology with Chinese-English translations, demonstrations of key and difficult points, and an English glossary of important terms. This helps learners comprehensively and broadly understand the textbook's content, better master key and difficult points, and enhance their recognition of important English terms.
