The "Revised Edition" published in January 1991 made substantial revisions to the original "Lanzhou Edition," adding sections such as the decomposition of word meanings, semantic fields, context and word meaning, phrases, sentence groups, and stylistic register. For this "Third Revised Edition," some sections have been adjusted, and it is still published in two volumes. To facilitate teaching and learning, especially to help self-study for "self-taught examination" students, the authors have also compiled Teaching Instructions and Self-Study References for Modern Chinese (Third Revised Edition) and a recording of "Mandarin and International Phonetic Alphabet," which are distributed together.
