The book consists of two volumes. The first volume is divided into four parts: Pre-Qin, Qin and Han, Wei-Jin-Northern and Southern Dynasties, and Sui-Tang-Five Dynasties. Within each part, chapters are organized by literary genre, discussing the development and evolution of Chinese literature as well as the works of various authors. Learning prompts are provided before each chapter, and review questions are included after each chapter. This textbook is also suitable for use in various normal schools and teacher education colleges. For this revision, some content was deleted according to the new teaching syllabus, and minor textual revisions were made. It is published in conjunction with the revised editions of Selected Works of Ancient Chinese Literary Genres (two volumes) and Selected Works of Ancient Chinese Literature (three volumes).
