Features: An English Reading Course for Comprehension and Speed is a guided, progressive reading textbook designed for college English majors in their first and second years, as well as for general English reading courses in higher education institutions, teacher training colleges, vocational colleges, correspondence universities, and satellite television English programs. This book serves as the reading textbook for the satellite television English program. It is divided into four volumes, covering two academic years. The book aims to gradually improve students' comprehension and reading speed through extensive reading practice, systematic development of reading skills, and vocabulary expansion. The selected articles cover a wide range of topics, are engaging and interesting, and feature well-designed exercises to stimulate learners' interest and enhance their understanding of Western culture. The second volume contains 40 passages, divided into 10 units. Each unit includes: 1) 4 passages with reading guides and exercises for comprehension and vocabulary expansion; 2) explanations and exercises on reading skills and word formation; 3) tests to assess reading comprehension and speed. Compared to the first volume, the length of the passages has increased to 750–950 words (first volume: 550–750 words); the vocabulary difficulty is controlled within 3,000 basic words (first volume: 2,000 basic words). The book is accompanied by a study guide, which includes annotations and translations of difficult passages.
