The first volume covers the general theory of ancient Chinese, with chapters on characters, vocabulary, grammar, rhetoric, phonology, and other knowledge of ancient Chinese, as well as common knowledge of ancient culture. The features of this book are: at the end of each chapter, a special section is set to explain the application of the chapter's knowledge in the teaching of classical Chinese in secondary schools; at the end of this volume, a special chapter is set to discuss the comprehensive application of ancient Chinese; grammar is downplayed, focusing only on the main grammatical phenomena that differ from modern Chinese grammar; the classical Chinese examples cited in the text are basically from secondary school Chinese textbooks and the "Selected Readings" in the second volume of this book. After each section, "Thinking and Exercises" are provided to facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes.
