Features: The Selected Works of Foreign Literary Works is a reference book compiled for teaching and learning purposes, based on A History of Foreign Literature (edited by Wang Zhongxiang and Nie Zhenzhao). It is divided into four volumes according to the content of A History of Foreign Literature. The first volume covers "Literature from Ancient Greece to the 17th Century," the second volume covers "Literature from the 18th Century to the Romantic Period," the third volume covers "19th-Century Literature," and the fourth volume covers "20th-Century Western Literature." The principle of compiling this selection is to strive to comprehensively reflect the development of foreign literature from ancient times to the present, so that readers can gain a perceptual understanding of the stylistic characteristics of the works involved when studying the history of foreign literature, thereby deepening their understanding of foreign literature. Therefore, for the important or representative works discussed in A History of Foreign Literature from ancient times to the present, we have made every effort to include them in the selection. For works with significant literary value that were not included in previous selections, we have also included them from the perspective of literary history. During the compilation process, we found the greatest difficulty in controlling the length of the selected works. For poetry, drama, or certain prose works, we have strived to adhere to the principle of including the full text within the limits of the available space to maintain the integrity of the works. However, many long and monumental works in foreign literature cannot be fully included in this selection due to its limited scope to maintain the overall picture.
