Do you need to remove the urinary catheter upon discharge from the hospital for hypospadias?

Patient's question:

My child is 3 years old and recently had surgery. I would like to ask, they still have a catheter inserted, but my child has been constantly upset, saying they want to get this thing out. Do children with hypospadias need to have their catheter removed upon discharge?

Doctor's answer:

When the patient with hypospadias is discharged from the hospital, the urinary catheter does not need to be removed. Under normal circumstances, about one week after the surgery, the incision heals well, and the condition stabilizes, so the catheter can be taken out of the hospital. After discharge, it is recommended to pay attention to keeping the urethra unobstructed, drink plenty of water, and observe whether the urine is yellow, clear, cloudy, or bloody. If the ureter is blocked or fractured (both ends of the ureter need to be brought back to the hospital), please return to the hospital within 3 weeks to remove the catheter. After the surgery, or to the local hospital to retrieve the catheter.
