Features: Through years of Japanese teaching practice, we have come to deeply realize that starting from the basic stage of Japanese learning, systematically guiding students to read a large number of original Japanese articles helps them master reading methods, continuously improve reading comprehension and the ability to analyze and solve problems, broaden their knowledge, and enrich their language. This is an indispensable and crucial issue in laying a solid foundation in Japanese and learning Japanese well. To meet this demand in Japanese teaching, we have compiled this "Japanese Extensive Reading Course" to address the urgent needs of Japanese teaching and learners. This textbook is suitable for extensive reading courses in Japanese majors, reading courses for university Japanese, and teaching in various Japanese teaching institutions. It can also be used by a wide range of self-study learners of Japanese and as supplementary material for intensive reading courses. This set of textbooks is divided into four volumes, with 20 lessons per volume. Each lesson consists of five parts: Text, New Words, Grammar and Sentence Patterns Explanation, Text Exercises, and Extra-Class Reading Practice.
The "Text" sections are all carefully selected original Japanese articles. When selecting materials, full attention has been paid to their ideological significance, knowledge content, scientific rigor, practicality, interest, and readability, while also considering the diversity of themes and genres. In terms of arrangement, the length and difficulty of the articles are balanced, progressing from easy to advanced in a gradual manner.
The "New Words" section introduces vocabulary that affects reading and comprehension, providing Japanese pronunciation and characters, along with Chinese explanations.
The "Grammar and Sentence Patterns Explanation" section concisely explains key grammatical phenomena and sentence patterns found in the text, with 2–3 example sentences and translations. The examples are designed to be (close to life), both interesting and practical, helping students deepen their understanding and application of new grammatical structures and sentence patterns.
The "Text Exercises" section follows the principle of improving students' comprehension skills and highlighting their instructional role in teaching. The questions are closely related to the text content, helping students master the lesson's material and check their understanding. Exercise 1 focuses on the pronunciation of vocabulary and the writing of Japanese characters; Exercise 2 covers the application of grammar, sentence patterns, adverb usage, and set phrases; Exercise 3 consists of thinking, judgment, and answer questions centered around the text content. The types of exercises vary across the four volumes, each with a different focus.
The "Extra-Class Reading Practice" section is for fast reading. Each lesson selects one to two short articles related in content or knowledge points to the text. Based on the requirements of each volume, different types of questions are provided for students to practice, aiming to improve their reading skills and align with the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and domestic Japanese Proficiency Tests (Grade 4 and Grade 8).
For the convenience of learners, each volume includes reference answers, a sentence pattern index, and a word index at the end. The "Extra-Class Readings" section at the end of each volume is designed for students with extra time and interest to use as self-assessment reading comprehension exercises.
