Features: To implement the spirit of the New Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education promulgated by the Advisory Committee on Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education in March 2000, and to cultivate globally-oriented English professionals, we have organized the compilation of this English Reading Course. The 21st Century English Major Reading Course primarily includes articles from newly published domestic and international newspapers and magazines, covering a wide range of topics such as society, politics, economy, culture, language, science and technology, and trade. During the writing process, the textbook strives to incorporate up-to-date language knowledge, carefully selected reading materials, and rich background information, emphasizing the academic and practical nature of the articles. In addition to passages on general literature, language, and daily life, we have also selected practical articles closely related to modern technology and trade, such as a special excerpt about the IT industry representative company Yahoo and an introduction to the application of search engines. This allows readers not only to improve their language skills and develop a strong sense of language but also to stay updated on the latest technological advancements, broadening their knowledge and horizons. The textbook not only provides abundant reading materials but also introduces main reading techniques progressively between every five units to help students master and flexibly apply the learned skills, thereby enhancing their overall reading proficiency. Additionally, the textbook incorporates many engaging images and thoughtfully adjusts the layout of the articles, making the reading experience refreshing and enjoyable. The entire textbook is divided into two volumes, each containing 20 units. Every unit consists of two main reading texts and three speed-reading texts, totaling approximately 200 articles. Following each main reading text are various exercises, including vocabulary, reading comprehension, and judgment, designed to be flexible and closely aligned with the reading techniques taught in the book. This course is suitable for reading courses for first and second-year English majors and can also serve as a supplementary reading textbook for advanced non-English majors.
