Features: The "College English Series Textbooks" are a set of teaching materials developed based on the fundamental requirements of the newly issued "College English Teaching Syllabus" by the Ministry of Education, designed to provide a continuous four-year English learning experience for college students. The development of this series has received strong support from the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education. This series is divided into five specialized fields: Legal English, Economic English, Management English, Humanities English, and Science and Engineering English. Each field consists of three sub-books, each intended for one semester. The entire series was jointly developed by Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, and Beijing University of Science and Technology, with Professor Yang Zhizhong of Nanjing University serving as the chief editor. The Legal English Tutorial was edited by Professors Zhao Jian and Xia Guozuo; the Management English Tutorial was edited by Professors Qiu Donglin and Hua Hongming; the Economic English Tutorial was edited by Professor Zhai Xiangjun, with the participation of Professor Zhang Yongxian; the Humanities English Tutorial was edited by Professor Chen Xinsun, with the participation of Professors Guo Qingmin, Zhang Weiping, and Zhang Anqi; the Science and Engineering English Tutorial was edited by Professors Peng Yi and Zhang Jingyuan. The entire series was co-authored by professional English teachers and general English teachers. This series of textbooks has the following features:
1. Considering the actual level of Chinese college students after completing two years of English study, the selection of texts, annotations, and exercises are based on the College English Teaching Syllabus's Level 4 requirements.
2. The textbooks adhere to the principle of gradual progress in both content and language. In terms of content, the first book primarily covers the principles and basic knowledge of the major, while the second and third books focus on the history and expert opinions of the major. The aim is to help students transition from basic English to professional English. In terms of language, the selection of materials considers difficulty and readability, following the principle of progressing from simple to complex.
3. Considering the requirements of the College English Teaching Syllabus for professional English class hours and reading volume, we primarily adopt the main and supplementary text (reading articles) system. The main text is emphasized through annotations and exercises, serving as the focus for in-class teacher-led instruction, while the supplementary text (reading articles) is mainly for self-study after class, reinforcing both language and knowledge related to the main text.
4. The textbooks emphasize the accuracy of understanding and students' application skills. Therefore, the exercises are primarily designed to address these two aspects, including comprehension, language application (including vocabulary and sentence application), etc. Comprehension questions focus on accurate understanding, thinking, analysis, evaluation, and discussion. The examples used in each lesson are related to both knowledge and language in the main text or previously learned texts.
5. For the convenience of self-study, reference translations of the main texts and answers to exercises are provided at the end of the book.
6. While all five textbooks in the series follow the general principles of development, each maintains its own systematic structure based on the unique knowledge characteristics of its respective course.
