What should be done about neonatal jaundice?

Patient's question:

My baby had jaundice right after birth, and the whole family was very worried. Could you please tell me how to deal with newborn jaundice?

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal jaundice is a common occurrence within the first week of birth. Parents should pay close attention to judging the severity of jaundice. Parents can observe the degree of jaundice on the newborn's skin under natural light. Mild jaundice is indicated by yellowing only on the face; moderate jaundice is indicated by yellowing on the trunk skin; and severe jaundice is indicated by yellowing on the limbs, hands, feet, and heart. During the day, it doesn't matter whether the baby is near the window under natural light or if the lights are off. It won't make any difference. Any wavelength of natural light is usable, and some light is better than none. However, the darkness at home affects the absorption of vitamin D, but don't let the baby get direct sunlight, as it's a concern for sunburn and also for UV damage.
