Is it serious for premature babies to have apnea?

Patient's question:

My child is a premature baby. Shortly after birth, their body is still very weak. Could you please tell me if the condition of apnea in premature babies is severe?

Doctor's answer:

The breathing pause in parents is a serious phenomenon that can lead to brain damage. Breathing pause is a common disease in premature infants, with an incidence rate as high as 50% to 60%. The smaller the gestational age, the higher the incidence rate. Neonatal breathing pause refers to premature infants with breathing cessation lasting more than 20 seconds, full-term infants with breathing cessation lasting more than 15 seconds, or premature infants with breathing cessation lasting less than 15-20 seconds, but accompanied by slow heartbeat, bluish or pale skin, and reduced muscle tone.
