Features: In September 1989, the China-Germany Institute of Economic Law, jointly established by Nanjing University and the University of G?ttingen, Germany, enrolled its first batch of graduate students. Dr. Stücken, a long-term expert sent by Germany, offered a course on German Civil Law to these students at Nanjing University, marking the official launch of the China-Germany Institute of Economic Law. In 1999, the institute celebrated its 10th anniversary. China and Germany agreed to mark this milestone by holding an academic symposium. To this end, the institute hosted an academic symposium titled "Chinese and German Legal Reception and Codification" at Nanjing University on October 4th and 5th, 1999. Simultaneously, this meeting served as a continuation of the first three Fei Yimin Law Symposiums. The theme of this academic symposium was chosen as "Chinese and German Legal Reception and Codification" primarily to explore some major theoretical and practical issues related to legal reception (primarily China's reception of German law) and codification in China and Germany. The aim was to learn from Germany's legal system and gain valuable insights from the successes and failures of Chinese and German experiences in codification. A total of over 20 papers were submitted for the conference, most of which were contributed by scholars from China and Germany. It is heartening to note that Dr., a graduate of the Law Department of the University of G?ttingen and currently a professor at the Law Department of Seoul National University in South Korea, also participated in the symposium. He delivered a special report on the issue of South Korea's reception of German civil law, thereby extending the discussion beyond the bilateral boundaries of China and Germany to some extent. The specific topics covered in this academic symposium included: the reception and codification of Chinese and German civil law, the reception and codification of Chinese and German commercial law, the reception and codification of Chinese and German economic law, the reception and codification of Chinese and German criminal law, and the reception and codification of Chinese and German administrative and procedural law. This collection of essays is organized in the order of the topics discussed in the symposium. It should be noted that this collection of essays is both a product of the academic symposium and also published as the annual report of the China-Germany Institute of Economic Law for 1998/99.
